Presentation: Tech4Africa Conference
On October 8th I presented research based on my PhD, in a presentation titled
Digital Art: Tunis to Joburg. Innovation and New Tech leading Futurist African Arts Practices
This visual and graphic intensive talk presents research on digital art practices in Africa, ranging across the continent from Tunisia to South Africa. It features digital arts festivals (Cairo through Joburg); specialists digital artworks; and the super talented sound, visual and innovation driven creative practitioners emerging in new tech and maker spaces in Africa. Not only a showcase but goes further to address the critical role taken up artists in this realm. Talk is based on research by Karen Dermineur (Dakar/Paris) and Tegan Bristow (JHB) for Parisian publisher MCD, Magazines Des Cultures Digitales, Digital Afrique.
Tech4Africa is a Africa wide annual gathering of technology, particularly ICT, developers and businesses. All presentations are voted by the community, making it an interesting conference to see who and what is influential right now. My presentation was one of very few presentations that looks at art and culture in the technology scene in Africa, and it was well received! I look forward to seeing more on culture and tech and Tech4Africa’s going forward.
